Kybella® Treatment in Wilmington, NC

Wilmington Dermatology Center is a leading practice in North Carolina when it comes to Botox, but our expertise doesn’t stop there. Led by our founder, Rosalyn George, M.D., our experienced aesthetic staff are experts in a range of treatments that will help you achieve the look you’ve always dreamed of.

Among the cosmetic injectables we offer is Kybella®, the only non-surgical, FDA approved injectable treatment for reducing fat under the chin. Wilmington Dermatology Center was the first practice in Wilmington to offer this treatment to our patients, and Dr. George was among a short list of initial physicians to be trained on the product when it was first released.

Kybella for Double Chin Treatment

Kybella® for “Double Chin” Treatment

Submental fat is the fat between your chin and neck, which causes the appearance of a “double chin.” This can affect a broad range of adults because it’s not limited to people who are overweight: it can be caused by genetics and aging as well, and it can often be resistant to diet and exercise.

That’s where Kybella® comes in. Kybella® is identical to the deoxycholic acid that is produced in the body. Deoxycholic acid produced in the body helps the body absorb fats. Kybella® is a cytolytic drug, which when properly injected into submental fat, destroys fat cells. Kybella® received FDA approval in April of 2015, making it the first and only non-surgical procedure to eliminate submental fat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some of the most common questions we’re asked about Kybella® include:

How Many People Have Been Treated with Kybella®?

Kybella® has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide, of which over 1,600 have been treated with Kybella®.

Am I a Candidate for Kybella® Injections?

If you’re looking for a non-surgical solution to treat submental fat, then Kybella® may be the treatment for you! When you come to us for a free consultation, we’ll determine if Kybella® is your best option. Please note that Kybella® destroys fat cells, so it’s not recommended to treat loose skin below the chin, although this is a concern we’re able to address using a treatment plan unique to your needs.

Do Kybella® Treatments Hurt?

When you come in for a Kybella® treatment, we’ll start by applying a grid-like temporary tattoo to the area to be addressed. Your treatment will last about 5-10 minutes, and you’ll experience a slight burning sensation at the injection sites, which is completely normal — Kybella® is actually killing off those fat cells! There are a number of side effects that may be experienced if Kybella® is injected improperly, which is why it’s important to have this treatment done by an expert.

Is There Downtime for Kybella®?

The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness around the treatment area. There’s not necessarily any downtime — that is, nothing that would stop you from going back to work the next day — but the swelling can be noticeable for a couple of days. Dr. George has undergone this treatment herself and found that ibuprofen and ice packs were able to ease her minor discomfort, but your aftercare plan will be unique to your specific needs.

Can Kybella® Be Done the Same Day as Other Injectable Procedures?

Yes, you can receive Kybella® the same day you receive other injectable treatments such as Botox, Voluma XC, and many other dermal fillers. We do prefer, however, to treat after any laser procedures.

How Many Kybella® Treatments Will I Need, and How Long Does It Last?

Kybella® is not a once-and-done treatment. Typically, we recommend about 2-3 sessions, but it could take up to 6 depending on your individual needs. These are usually spaced no less than a month apart.

This may sound like a lot of time and effort, but the good news is that the results of Kybella® are permanent, and our patients rarely see the need for retreatment! Kybella® destroys fat cells for good, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
