Whether you produce so much sweat that it qualifies as a medical condition, or you’re just tired of constantly staining your clothes, we know how frustrating the embarrassment caused by excessive sweating can be. That’s why we offer miraDry®, a sustainable solution to underarm sweat. miraDry® doesn’t mask the problem—it gets rid of it, making it a source of significant peace of mind for the men and women who choose this procedure. At Wilmington Dermatology Center, we’re proud to have Rosalyn George, M.D., lead the first team in the greater Wilmington area to offer miraDry ® and freedom from excessive sweat.
What is the History of the miraDry® Procedure?
miraDry® was cleared by the FDA for reducing underarm sweat with lasting results in 2015. Since then, it’s become a popular treatment for people who are unhappy with their underarm sweat — from mild cases to severe medical hyperhidrosis — and has been featured nationwide in magazines and television shows.
Prior to Treatment
When you come in for miraDry® treatment, we start with a starch-iodine test to determine where you are producing the most sweat. We’ll mark the target areas with a temporary tattoo, and then numb the area. The anesthesia may cause a mild pricking and burning sensation as it sets in.
During Treatment
During treatment, we apply precise electromagnetic energy to the target areas selected prior to the procedure. During your procedure, you may experience some pressure, light pulling on the skin, and a warm sensation. The total length of a visit for miraDry® doesn’t usually last more than an hour.
After Treatment & Results
Immediately after the procedure, you’ll be recommended consistent icepack use over the next several days, and potentially a mild over-the-counter pain medication. You may experience soreness over the next 24-48 hours and swelling that should slowly subside over a couple of weeks, but there is otherwise minimal downtime — aside from holding off from exercising for several days, neither of these should impact your ability to live your life normally.
You should be able to see results right after treatment, and because the treated sweat glands don’t come back after the miraDry® procedure, your results will last for years to come!
miraDry® Frequently Asked Questions
How is sweat produced?
Underarm sweat is produced through two types of sweat glands: eccrine glands, which produce more fluid to cool the body, and apocrine glands, which produce a thicker fluid that has a distinctive odor. miraDry® treatment is designed to eliminate both types of glands for less sweat and odor.
Why do some people sweat more than others?
There isn’t one reason some people’s sweat glands produce sweat while they’re at rest, or excessive sweat for their cooling needs, but some people sweat up to four to five times more than normal.
Is it unusual to sweat a lot?
Not at all — in fact, one in five Americans say they sweat excessively, and nearly five percent qualify for medical hyperhidrosis.
Don’t I need my underarm sweat glands?
Actually, no. Your body contains over four million sweat glands, and only about two percent are in your underarms. Eliminating that few sweat glands doesn’t affect your body’s ability to cool itself.
Is there downtime with miraDry® treatment?
There may be mild pain for 24-48 hours and swelling that will be most intense for a day or so after the miraDry® procedure but ultimately fade over four to six weeks. There may also be some temporary altered sensation in the treatment area and slightly around it. Besides forgoing exercise for a couple of days, none of this should impact your ability to live normally.
Does miraDry® cause increased sweating in other parts of the body?
No. When sweat glands are removed from the underarms, you simply stop sweating in that area. Don’t worry – your body won’t start sweating more in other areas to compensate.
Do the results of the miraDry® procedure last?
Yes. Because the sweat glands don’t grow back, patients experience a major, lasting reduction in underarm sweat.
How Much Does miraDry® Treatment Cost?
One miraDry® treatment includes both underarms and will cost $1,900. We can discuss your treatment plan and payment options during a free consultation.
