Frequently Asked Questions
Some of the most frequently asked questions we receive regarding CoolSculpting® include:
What is the History of CoolSculpting®?
The origin of this amazing device came from a study on popsicle panniculitis where Harvard University scientists, Dieter Manstein, M.D. and R. Rox Anderson, M.D. observed that some children got dimples due to eating popsicles. Cryolipolsis became the insight behind this freezing technology that the CoolSculpting ™ procedure is based on. In September of 2010, CoolSculpting® received FDA approval with a clean safety profile.
How Do I Start My CoolSculpting® Treatment?
At Wilmington Dermatology, every one of our treatment plans starts off with a consultation. We outline your target areas using a 360-degree approach, walk you through the CoolSculpting ™ procedure, and answer any questions you may have regarding pre- and post-procedure. From there that we can determine if CoolSculpting ™ is the best fat reduction treatment for your problem area. Once treatment areas are determined, we take a variety of photographs from various angles that enable us to gauge your progress after a 3-month period.
Does CoolSculpting® Hurt?
CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive treatment, and patients describe feeling pressure and intense cold at the start of their session, but this sensation dissipates in the first few minutes. Treatments typically last about one to two hours, and most patients read, work, or even nap during their procedure!
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Our experts will tailor an individual treatment plan just for you in order to meet your goals, but most patients do see optimal results after one session! This can vary from person to person, so we might schedule additional sessions based on your needs.
What Should I Expect from CoolSculpting®?
During our extensive consultation, we’ll outline our target areas using a 360-degree approach and determine if CoolSculpting® is the right treatment for you. We’ll take extensive photographs to gauge your progress after a 3-month period, and select the best applicator size for your treatment area. On the day of your procedure, you’ll be able to lay comfortably and read, work, or even nap during the 1-2 hours CoolSculpting® usually lasts. From there, we’ll remove the applicator and massage the area, and then send you on your way to resume your normal activities. You may feel some tingling and numbness in the treatment area, but if there is any discomfort, we will discuss relief options with you.
Are There Side Effects or Downtime?
Typical side effects following CoolSculpting® include numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, tingling, mild pain, or stinging. While not everyone experiences these side effects, we can provide you with prescription options to help with any discomfort. There’s no downtime associated with CoolSculpting®; some patients even receive treatment on their lunch break and go right back to work.
How Much Does CoolSculpting® Cost?
Consultations at Wilmington Dermatology are free, and the cost of CoolSculpting® will determine how many treatments are needed, as well as on which areas of the body, which require different applicators. If we decide CoolSculpting® is right for you, we’ll be able to give you an estimate based on your individual treatment plan.
When Will I See Results, and How Long Will They Last?
Results from a CoolSculpting® treatment can be as noticeable as early as three weeks after your treatment, with the most dramatic results happening after a 3-month period. The results from CoolSculpting® are permanent — once those fat cells are destroyed, they’re gone. However, if you were to gain weight in the future, it would be evenly distributed throughout your body, including the area where you previously received CoolSculpting® treatment.
