What is the History of Sculptra® Aesthetic?

The FDA approved poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) in 2004 for treating facial fat loss and wrinkle reduction. Prior to this approval, the FDA had previously approved the drug after studies were conducted on HIV patients, specifically “for restoration and/or correction of the signs of facial fat loss in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).”

Galderma developed Sculptra® Aesthetic to be the preeminent PLLA injectable filler, providing patients with a non-surgical, safe, and minimally-invasive procedure with results that can last for years.

How Do Sculptra® Injections Work?

As with all filler injectables, your Sculptra® procedure begins with a complimentary consultation at Wilmington Dermatology Center, where we’ll determine how we can best reach your aesthetic goals. However, Sculptra® injections also require a week of prep while we dilute Sculptra® Aesthetic with sodium chloride to ensure smooth and lasting results.

Prior to Treatment

On the day of your Sculptra® procedure, we choose three injection points per cheek and numb them with injectable lidocaine for your comfort. We also dilute the Sculptra® with more lidocaine.

During Treatment

We apply the Sculptra® injections to the targeted areas, using techniques honed by years of practice to ensure optimal outcomes. Immediately afterwards, we massage Vaseline onto your skin to smooth injection points, and ice them to minimize swelling.

After Treatment & Results

You’ll be instructed on post-treatment care, including massages five times a day for five days following the procedure. There is the potential for swelling and bruising that shouldn’t last more than a week. Results appear gradually over up to three months, and last up to two years!

When will I see Sculptra® Aesthetic results?

Sculptra® procedure results are seen gradually over a three-month period of time, since it takes time to rebuild the lost collagen in the skin.

Is one brand or product better than another?

Many of our products can treat facial wrinkles, but Sculptra® injections are an unparalleled solution for non-surgical natural, gradual lift and volume increase.

Can I get Sculptra® Aesthetic the day before a big event?

Sculptra® injections have a potential for downtime. Not all patients bruise, but the injected fluid may cause swelling. These side effects generally dissipate completely over seven days, so please plan accordingly.

Does the Sculptra® procedure hurt?

After being treated with lidocaine, most patients describe Sculptra® injections as a pinch with pressure. Sensitivity depends on the patient and target area, but most patients have no issues tolerating it.

How does Sculptra® Aesthetic get rid of my wrinkles?

Sculptra® Aesthetic’s PLLA triggers an increase in collagen production. Over several weeks, rebuilt collagen strands restore facial volume and fullness while smoothing wrinkles and folds.

How Much Does Sculptra® Aesthetic Cost?

Does it really matter who does my Sculptra® Aesthetic?

Can I get Sculptra® Aesthetic done the same day as other injectable procedures?

Yes, it’s safe to get Sculptra® Aesthetic the same day as other injectables like BOTOX®, Dysport®, and JUVÉDERM®.

That said, we prefer to complete injectables after any laser treatments in the target area.

What happens if I need more correction, or didn’t achieve the results I’d anticipated?

At Wilmington Dermatology Center, your outcomes are most important. We offer a three-month follow-up visit for the Sculptra® procedure where we evaluate your progress and adjust treatment as necessary. Treatment can take multiple vials and a series of procedures, which we discuss candidly with you during your free consultation.
