What Are Moles?
Most moles fall into two categories:
- “Atypical” or dysplastic nevi develop over time; they tend to be flat, have irregular borders, and contain different colors. While often benign, they can indicate risk for melanoma, especially if you have a family history of skin cancer.
- Congenital nevi appear at birth and are typically benign, but if you have many of them or a larger one, it may indicate an increased risk for melanoma. These moles are often round or oval shaped, and typically raised.
While moles themselves don’t often have cancerous cells, nearby skin may have them — which is why it is important to get your skin checked regularly!
