How To Prevent and Correct Skin Discoloration

How To Prevent and Correct Skin Discoloration

Now that summer has ended, it’s that time of year where we can fight pigmentation and discoloration that’s presented itself in the summer months! At Wilmington Dermatology Center, we have several great products and treatment options to give you that great glowing skin everyone desires.

Discoloration Improvement Products

The first step in your journey to great skin is priming the skin with products designed to fight discoloration on the cellular level. There are a number of these discoloration related skincare products like Skinceuticals Discoloration defense, Cyspera, and SkinMedica Lytera 2.0 that, when used alone, can yield some nice improvements to brown and discolored areas. By using these products prior to having treatments done, you are also quieting melanin production by inhibiting tyrosinase, which will decrease the incidence of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a risk in laser treatments depending on your skin tone.

Chemical Peels for Improving Discoloration

If you’re looking to take your skincare to another level, then starting out with a series of chemicals peels may be a great option for you! These types of treatments are reserved for the winter months, where sun exposure and heat won’t be an obstacle post treatment. Your aesthetic provider will discuss your skincare goals and determine which chemical peel is the best one for you. Chemical peels come in a variation of strengths from mild, where you may have some light flaking, to a deep chemical peel that may be a few weeks of peeling and recovery. Chemical peels are effective in improving the skin’s appearance by reducing acne scars, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles. Whether you choose a light, medium or deep peel depends on the severity of the skin issues you want to address.

Laser Options for Improving Discoloration

If you’re ready to take the plunge into more advanced treatment options, there are laser options that can address pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkling, and even red spots…the options are almost endless! One of our favorite winter procedures at WDC is our Forever Young BBL (broad band Light) laser. Because it’s both simple and dynamic, BBL can be used to treat nearly any skin irregularity, virtually anywhere on the body. Some of the most popular treatment areas include the face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back of hands. If you’re unhappy with any blemishes, spots, discoloration, or other imperfections anywhere on your body, odds are high BBL can help to improve or remove them. These include:

  • Age spots
  • Freckles
  • Small vessels
  • Brown spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sunspots
  • Redness
  • Acne
  • Rosacea

The BBL is better served in series of 3-5 treatments, and you must stay out of the sun to get and maintain optimal results. Our other most popular laser for the winter months, and a great resource if you’re dealing with pigmentation and wrinkling, is our Tetra CoolPeel CO2 Laser. CO2 lasers are the gold standard of treating skin surface issues including wrinkles, age spots, acne scars, and loose or discolored skin. The Tetra CoolPeel from DEKA was developed to provide a fractional ablative treatment with minimal downtime and achieves this with an unparalleled level of treatment customization to provide the most minimal interaction possible. The CoolPeel treatment is recommended in a series of 3 treatments for optimal results and correction. Like most laser treatments, the winter months are the ideal time to treat your skin, as risks of sun exposure and heat are not as prevalent.

At WDC we make addressing pigmentation easy and take the time to present you with options on what product or procedures may be best suited for your skin type and needs. Call or text us at 910-256-4350 today for your complimentary consult!
