Hyperhidrosis awareness month!
It’s November! While most of us are focused on getting our turkey prep in order, we want to remind you that November is also Hyperhidrosis awareness month. Hyperhidrosis is a thing that plagues many men and women on a daily basis. It is defined as excessive sweating and those affecting may have this in hands, feet, underarms, and really anywhere on your body that has sweat glands!
While this condition can be quite common, it can be embarrassing and challenging on a daily basis. People with hyperhidrosis produce 4 to 5 times more sweat than average, which can significantly impair quality of life. This may cause limitations in work and social relationships, sports and leisure activities, and can negatively affect emotional health.
There are a number of steps you can take if you’re suffering from hyperhidrosis:
- The first step your provider will typically take is starting you on a prescription or over the counter anti-perspirant. This should help control the sweating, or at least the smell on a daily basis. The anti-perspirant doesn’t have to be limited to your underarms either! It can be used on hands, feet, and even hairline if needed.
- If the issue isn’t being controlled with the deodorant, another step you could take is using botox injections (yes, the same stuff used to prevent wrinkles from forming). This is actually an FDA-approved treatment for the underarm area and at times your insurance may help cover the cost. (we’re happy to check on prior approval if this is an option you think you would be interested in)
- 65% of people with excessive sweating suffer from underarm (axillary) sweating, which occurs either on its own or in combination with other body areas. Lastly, we have an awesome in-office procedure called Miradry! Miradry is also an FDA-cleared noninvasive treatment that will free you from a lifetime of bothersome sweat in your underarms. By eliminating the sweat and odor glands, you can feel confident that your underarm area will remain dry in any situation. This device uses microwave energy to permanently destroy the sweat and odor glands alike…..making for a significant reduction in underarm sweat.
