Starting a skincare regimen in 2014

A new year means a new opportunity to change up your routine and that includes a skincare regimen. The skin is the largest organ of the human body and requires special attention to look and feel it’s best. Now is a great time to start a facial skincare regimen and make it an everyday routine.

There are so many skincare products to choose from, that it can be overwhelming! Finding the right ones that fit your skincare needs can be a difficult task.  One can spend a lot of money in buying and trying the products to find the one you like. Many people also discontinue their skincare regimen before they have a chance to see the results. Often times, there is also confusion as to what order the products should be applied and when, AM or PM.

We are here to help! Wilmington Dermatology Center carries two of the top skincare lines in the industry, SkinMedica and SkinCeuticals. The reason we offer these two lines is because they can actually make positive changes in your skin and help protect your skin from the environment. Considered “Cosmeceuticals,” because the products contain active ingredients that are stronger than what is in the over-the-counter products. So, let’s talk GRASS!

What is Grass? – GRASS is an acronym for Growth Factors, Retinols, Antioxidants, Specialty Products, and Sun Protection. These products are considered crucial for maintaining your skin’s health and turning back the clock on some of the aging effects as your skin matures.

Growth Factors – Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins that work in combination with each other to control the activity of cells and they are critical in skin repair and remodeling. SkinMedica has the only medical grade skincare on the market with a high concentration of growth factor proteins. SkinMedica’s TNS Essential Serum is rich in human growth factors, collagen, antioxidants and matrix proteins. And while that is all very scientific sounding, it’s what it does that really matters. It works by rebuilding Type 1 collagen by up to 60% in 6 months which improves the appearance of fine lines, skin texture, and skin resiliency. It can also help maintain the benefits of cosmetic procedures.

Retinol – Retinols are essential in skin rejuvenation. With age, our cellular turnover process slows down. We begin holding onto dead skin cells because of this causing our complexion to look dull. Retinols will give that luminous look of young age back to your skin. Retinols improve fine lines, aging, sun-damaged skin and it enhances exfoliation without visible peeling.

Antioxidant – Antioxidants are super important in maintaining healthy skin. They protect your skin from UVA rays that can cause cell mutation by shielding DNA. This helps prevent signs of premature aging. Antioxidants also improve skin tone and texture and reduce laxity in the skin.

Specialty Products – Eye creams, moisturizers, lip repair, brightening creams, redness relief and exfoliating cleansers are considered specialty products. These products are incorporated in your regimen to suit your skincare needs.

Sunscreen – Sunscreen containing zinc oxide is the only ingredient that blocks UVA rays, the sun’s more damaging rays responsible for skin cancer and aging. UVA rays make up over 95% of the sun’s rays. UVA is the key cause of aging so protecting your skin with a medical grade sunscreen with zinc oxide will greatly reduce the aging process.
