Sunscreen: The facts
We talk about it all the time…”use sunscreen” everyone says, while this statement is very true there are some guidelines to using sunscreen in order to give you optimal protection from the sun. The truth is, people usually get sunburned not because they don’t use sunscreen at all, but because they didn’t use enough sunscreen, didn’t reapply it after being in the sun, or used an expired product. Here are some guidelines on applying sunscreen and some answers to frequently asked sunscreen questions.
1- The best type of sunscreen is the one you will use again and again. Just make sure it offers broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection, has an SPF of 30 or higher and is water resistant. The type of sunscreen you use is a personal choice and the options seem endless. Some prefer different creams for the face than the body, or prefer sprays over cream altogether. We don’t care what it is…..just use it!
2- When should you wear sunscreen? Every day if you will be outside. The sun emits harmful UV rays year-round. Even on cloudy days, up to 80 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin.Snow, sand, and water increase the need for sunscreen because they reflect the sun’s rays….so fund something you like, because you should be using it all the time.
3- Apply sunscreen generously before going outdoors. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you. If you wait until you are in the sun to apply sunscreen, your skin is unprotected and can burn. Don’t forget to use enough sunscreen. Most adults need at least one ounce of sunscreen, about the amount you can hold in your palm, to fully cover all exposed areas of your body. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin.
4- Lastly, Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours to remain protected, or immediately after swimming or excessively sweating. This is one of the main things that gets people sunburned.
