What is CoolTone™?

CoolTone™ is a treatment that uses magnetic muscle stimulation technology, or MMS, to penetrate through the skin and fat layers to target only the muscle layer. MMS uses an electromagnetic field to stimulate your “fast-twitch” muscles, causing them to contract, which strengthens the muscle fibers and leads to a more toned appearance.

These “fast-twitch” muscles are the ones you’d use for activities like sprinting and CrossFit, but the reality is that it’s difficult to sustain these exercises for extended periods of time. CoolTone™ works to strengthen these muscles, and therefore works best for patients who are already in shape but are looking for a little extra definition, not a weight loss solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some of the most frequent questions we’re asked about CoolTone™ include:

Is CoolTone™ for Me?

The ideal candidates for CoolTone™ are adults who are near their ideal body weight, who eat well and exercise regularly, but who have muscle areas that haven’t quite responded to their workouts. When you come in for your free consultation at Wilmington Dermatology Center, we’ll take the time to learn more about your lifestyle and goals in order to determine if CoolTone™ is right for you.

What Can I Expect from CoolTone™ Treatment Sessions?

Wilmington Dermatology Center consultations are extensive. We outline your target areas using a 360- degree approach, walk you through the CoolTone™ procedure, and answer any questions you may have. Once treatment areas are determined, we’ll take a variety of photographs from various angles that enable us to gauge your progress after treatment.

Depending on the areas being treated, procedures last about one to two hours, making this an easy procedure to perform during your lunch hour without any major disruption to your day. Patients can resume their normal activities — including work and exercise — immediately following the procedure. The CoolTone™ procedure is performed by Wilmington’s most experienced CoolSculpting® and CoolTone™ staff, under the training of Dr. Rosalyn George.

Does CoolTone™ Hurt?

Many people describe CoolTone™ as a warm sensation that produces intense muscle contractions, but this feeling dissipates during the first few minutes of treatment. There is no pain associated with CoolTone™, and treatments typically last for about 30 minutes per session.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Unlike CoolSculpting®, CoolTone™ isn’t a one-and-done treatment. Just as your muscle definition will fade if you stop working out for a few weeks, CoolTone™ requires maintenance! The initial treatment is usually two sessions per week for two weeks, and the frequency of your maintenance sessions afterward will be determined by your treatment plan and goals.

Are There Side Effects or Downtime?

Typical side effects following CoolTone™ include redness, swelling, tingling, and mild muscle pain or cramping. Not everyone experiences these side effects, but we do provide prescription options to help you with any discomfort that occurs. As a completely non-surgical procedure, patients typically resume all normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

How Much Does CoolTone™ Cost?

The cost of CoolTone™ muscle toning treatment will vary from person to person. Depending on your personal goals and existing levels of muscle definition, you might start off with 4-6 sessions, and then maintenance sessions at the discretion of our team. When you come in for your free consultation, we’ll be able to give you a more accurate cost estimate based on your treatment plan.

When Will I See Results?

Patients usually see results as early as three weeks after the initial treatment, but the most dramatic results can be expected in about three months if you maintain a healthy lifestyle. If your current activity levels decrease sharply, or you suddenly shift to an unhealthy diet, it can result in the decrease of muscles and an increase of fat. After all, CoolTone™ is meant as a supplement to define the muscles you already have!

What’s the Difference Between EMSCULPT® and CoolTone™?

EMSCULPT® relies on electronic muscle stimulation, while CoolTone™ is electromagnetic muscle stimulation, which bypasses the sensory nerves. This enables patients to tolerate the high-intensity contractions more comfortably.
